About this work

Balam is the Maya word for jaguar, guardian of the night and of the underworld. Here the animal emerges from an electric blue jungle, its coat laid in gold leaf and strokes of orange that seem to burn against the dark, the outlines drawn in charcoal.

The gaze is the point: calm, direct, older than the forest around it.
